How I Treat an Ear Infection Naturally (Without Reaching for Antibiotics or Tylenol!)

Just a few months ago my daughter woke me up complaining her ear hurt, this is the first time we’ve ever had to deal with an ear infection and to say I was scrambling at 2am would be an understatement. It was such a great reminder for me to practice what I preach - arm yourself with knowledge so you’re never caught off guard!

Ear infections are one of the most common childhood ailments—we should be prepared for them! For many, the default solution is a quick trip to the doctor for antibiotics. But what if there were gentler, natural ways to support healing without immediately resorting to pharmaceuticals?

Spoiler alert: There are.

Most common causes of an ear infection

Most ear infections are triggered by bacteria or viruses trapped behind the eardrum, often after a cold, allergy flare, or sinus congestion. Fluid builds up, causing inflammation and pressure—cue the pain, fussiness, and sleepless nights.

The good news? Not all ear infections need antibiotics. In fact, many resolve on their own with proper support and care.

Natural Remedies to support an ear ache;

Garlic Mullein Oil Drops

This is a powerhouse combo used for centuries. Garlic is antimicrobial, and mullein is soothing to inflamed tissues. Warm a few drops (and test to make sure they’re not hot!) and place in the affected ear, then plug with a cotton ball.

Only use if the eardrum is not ruptured. If there's drainage or a history of perforation, skip this remedy.

Warm Compress

A warm rice sock, hot water bottle, or heating pad applied to the ear can help relieve pain and improve lymphatic flow, encouraging drainage. I like to heat up my rice bag in the oven, a tip for those who are also microwaveless!

Onion Poultice

Onions have natural antimicrobial properties. Slice an onion in half, warm it slightly, wrap it in a cloth, and place it over the affected ear. It may sound strange, but this age old practice has helped immensely!

Hot Cup Suction Method (this is my favorite for reducing pain!)

A traditional method using a glass cup briefly warmed by placing warm water in it for a few minutes, then emptied. The empty cup is placed over the ear. As the cup cools, it creates gentle suction that can help relieve pressure and encourage drainage. Be very careful with heat and ensure it’s not too hot before applying.

Red Light Therapy (LLLT)

Low-level red light therapy around the ear and jawline can reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and support lymphatic drainage. This can be especially helpful for chronic ear infections or when combined with other remedies. My daughter likes to fall asleep with the red light shining around her ear when battling an ear ache.

Use a high-quality red/NIR light and avoid shining it directly into the ear canal. This is my favorite one, this link saves ya a lot!

Chiropractic Care

Gentle pediatric chiropractic adjustments can help realign the upper cervical spine, allowing better drainage of the Eustachian tubes. This reduces pressure and promotes healing. We ebb and flow with chiropractic care these days, opting for very gentle adjustments when the body needs it! Finding a chiropractor who does very gentle treatments has been key for us.

Elevate the Head

If your kiddo is congested, elevating the head slightly during sleep can help fluid drain from the middle ear more effectively.

When to See a Doctor (trust your mom gut always!)

Natural remedies are powerful, but know your limits. I’d seek medical care if;

  • My child has a high fever

  • Pain lasts more than 48 hours

  • There’s fluid or pus draining from the ear

  • I suspected a ruptured eardrum

Prevention Tips

  • Avoid dairy during colds or ear infections (it’s mucus-forming!)

  • Breastfeed if possible—breastmilk contains antibodies that protect against infection

  • Address food sensitivities (gluten, dairy, soy can contribute to chronic inflammation)

  • Encourage movement, lymph flow is so important

It always pays off to be prepared, with the tools and the knowledge to support your family! When in doubt, always work with a trusted provider! Empowered parents raise healthy kids.
